Service Obligations in the National French Honor Society
The SHF includes a service component. In order to remain a member in good standing at the end of the academic year, students must complete fifteen hours of service within the organization over the course of the year. This includes mandatory activities, and others you may choose. Most of these activities award one hour of service for every hour you serve.
Mandatory activities that WILL NOT be counted towards your 15 service hours:
- Attendance, conversation 100% in French and encouragement of others struggling with the language, at French Table evenings at the Starbuck’s across from Old Hickory Mall.
- Work and perform in our puppet theater: at the Jackson International Food and Art Fair in September, at our Alumni Weekends in October, at the University of Memphis Language Fair in the spring semester, AND during school for hospitals and schools.
- Tutoring French
- Other opportunities will be announced as we think them up, but Dr. Spires gets the final say as to whether they will count as service activities.
Mandatory activities that WILL NOT be counted towards your 15 service hours:
- Attend monthly organizational meetings, usually Wednesdays at 6:45am in our classroom. You must arrive at 6:45.
- Attend our annual initiation ceremony - usually at Dr. Spires' home, with other area French professors in attendance.
- Organize and participate in National French Week activities.
- Be a part of our French Club and attend events. I'd prefer it if you attend our skinny block club meetings, but if you have an important conflict (Beta, etc.), I'll honor that.
